Discover the Charm of Newmarket
Welcome to Newmarket! If you love community—and the history, culture and diversity that help to shape a shared sense of place—we’re glad you stopped by!
Small-town warmth
Natural beauty
Local shops
Whether you live here, or you’re just visiting, Newmarket is full of treasures to discover.
Make your way along Main Street, past brick and clapboard buildings, where mill workers themselves once came and went each time the shift whistle blew. The sprawling mills remain—an ever-present reminder of the hardworking community of many cultures, many backgrounds, that grew up along the banks of the Lamprey River.
Grab a bite to eat at one of our locally owned eateries, and you may be dining in a former millinery shop, dry goods store, or grocery market.
Meet your neighbor at the post office, just across from the Community Church.
Launch a kayak down at the riverfront next to Schanda Park, where flat-bottomed gundalows and giant schooners once ferried bricks, timber, coal, and bolts of fabric to and from Portsmouth Harbor and beyond.
Catch a show at the historic Stone Church, once a Universalist Meeting House or an exhibit at The MillSpace, where laborers once churned out fabric or crafted shoes.
Pause on the footbridge, above the thundering waters of the Macallen Dam that powered Newmarket’s industrial past. Across the river, Heron Point Sanctuary catches the late afternoon sun, and a great blue heron wades at the water’s edge.
